Win A Home

Our brief was relatively simple but broad; we were tasked to design and decorate a three-story home in Umhlanga Rocks. The home was one of the last sea-facing properties available in the area and provided us with a fanatic opportunity. In terms of style and taste, the brief was left open-ended, but the biggest constraint was the extremely limited budget that we were faced with. We were pushed to undergo a fair amount of up cycling and refurbishing of older pieces. Our team task was to design beautiful spaces each week so as to win against all other teams.

Our Solution

From the beginning, we opted for a look that exudes an eclectic, contemporary and comfortable feel to ensure a family felt like they were constantly on holiday to make use of the extensive sea view.

We brought in cool hues, cane furniture, ‘beach’ inspired accessories, palm printed scatters and a large verity of bespoke pieces throughout the home.

We opted for custom made wallpaper and laminated flooring cladded adjacent to the wallpaper to bring in different textures within the living room.

A specialised paint technique was used in the spare bedroom to create a feature wall; teal coloured to further bring in ocean hues. This was complemented by metallics and complementary colours to ensure more of a ‘pop’.

In terms of the main bedroom, leading onto the bathroom, we designed a divider so as to form a stylised partition between the two spaces. We used recycled boxes and painted them in gold and red and accessorised them using elements from both the bathroom and bedroom spaces.

The patio was a fun task, where we used bright colours, plants and utilised a magnificent banana leaf fabric for the patio furniture to create a vibrant space. We ensured continuouty from the interior space right through to the patio so as to ensure a seamless transition and inclusive space.
